About EDAMAT

The project has produced a tool composed of three parts:

  1. Framework for planning, developing and implementing disability mainstreamed policy
  2. Checklist for assessing the mainstreaming of disability in laws, policies and programmes
  3. Advocacy Guidelines to promote effective compliance on mainstreaming policy and practice

Over a two-year period in six European countries disabled people, representatives of disability organisations, research academics and policymakers have been consulted on issues of inclusion and accessibility in relation to disability. Extensive research and analysis has taken place on key policy areas such as health, education and housing in each of the member state countries. As an outcome the EDAMAT framework has been designed to measure how inclusive policy development is, and to identify steps for developing truly disability mainstreamed policies in Europe.

EDAMAT launch 4
On November 21st 2006 in Brussels the EDAMAT Tool was launched as part of a co-financed European Commission Project, delivered by Leonard Cheshire Disability. The launch saw disability stakeholders ranging from academics, policymakers, representatives of organisations of people with disabilities and disabled people from 11 Member States. The tool presented the 'Four Principles of Effective Mainstreaming', as well as practical examples from Ireland, Malta and Greece as to how EDAMAT can ensure that disability issues are better implemented and measured. The toolkit has been published in English, Spanish, Maltese, Greek and Portuguese, as well as other accessible formats, and is freely available from the website.
