Leonard Cheshire Disability Hosts Joint Conference
On 6-8 December 2008 Leonard Cheshire Disability and the Commonwealth Foundation jointly hosted a regional conference in South Asia focusing on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Recognising that they have not paid enough attention to disability in the past, the Commonwealth Foundation asked Leonard Cheshire Disability to act as their technical partner at this event. Our role was to introduce the subject of disability to the non-governmental organisations, disabled people's organisations and Cheshire services that attend the conference and help spread good practice.  We also forged links between organisations to share successful ideas in the future.

What Keeps Children Out of School in a Conflict Zone?
Darfur, Sudan, is at the centre of an ongoing humanitarian crisis and approximately 8,000 children in Western Darfur do not attend school. In October Maria Kett and Jean-Francois Trani of the Leonard Cheshire Disability and Inclusive Development Centre at University College London started a research programme to find out why this is the case and how children can be helped to get an education. Their research will uncover exactly how many children are not in school and what barriers keep them away. For children with disabilities, the study will also examine what their capabilities are and how they can be strengthened so that they can go to school alongside their peers.

Training Given in Research Using the ‘Capability Approach'
Looking at what people can do, not what they can't, is the basis of the ‘capability approach' developed by Nobel prize winning economist Amaryta Sen. Jean-Francois Trani from the Leonard Cheshire Disability and Inclusive Development Centre at University College London recently helped run a workshop on qualitative research methods and the capability approach at the Human Development and Capability Association Conference in New Delhi, India. Working with an Indian organisation called Project Why, Dr Trani helped them and the others attending the conference to assess the impact of their work on children with disabilities. This will strengthen Project Why's programmes, which work with over 700 children with and without special needs in the slums of New Delhi.

Disability Issues Represented at European Development Days
Leonard Cheshire Disability provided a voice for disability within international development initiatives at the European Development Days run by the European Commission and hosted by the French government from 15-17 November 2007. Staff ran an information stand promoting the Young Voices films and raising awareness of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and on the need for development to be inclusive. They also contributed to workshops on themes such as the Millennium Development Goals, which will not be met unless disabled people are included in development programmes.

Disability and Inclusive Development Still Available
The first book in the Leonard Cheshire Development series on inclusive development, Disability and Inclusive Development, provides an excellent introduction to the importance of including disability in all development programmes. A copy may be ordered by clicking on the link below. The second book in the series, Poverty and Disability, will be published in June.
